Twenty-year-old New Zealand top amateur golfer, Ben Campbell

Kiwi Ben Campbell tops the amateur golfing roster

“New Zealand number one Ben Campbell has shot a superb seven under 65 in round three of the Australian Master of the Amateurs at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club to climb nine places into a share of second place.

“The 20-year-old had rounds of 73 and 75 to be in a share of 13th place but turned that around in spectacular fashion with the low round of the tournament to be only five shots back from the leader Nathan Holman heading into todays final round.

“The Masterton amateur Campbell has a good record in the Australian Amateur events – he has finished runner up in the Australian Amateur the past two years – and today has a good chance of winning the prized Master of Amateurs title.

“No New Zealand golfer has even won the Master of Amateurs title.Campbell is comfortably the best Kiwi in the field with the next best Vaughan McCall and Mathew Perry back in a share of 29th place. The Southland number one bounced back well from his seven over 79 to card a one over par 73.New Zealand Amateur champion Mathew Perry is also on that number after rounds of 75, 76 and 74 while Auckland rep Sam An had a disappointing five over 77 to be T-32nd.”
